About the Site

The site is approximately 15 hectares and is located directly to the south of Frampton Cotterell, in Coalpit Heath. It consists of 215 homes with landscaping and associated works, including 35% affordable housing.

Its boundaries are defined by existing built development to the north and west; with the residential streets of Blackberry Drive, St Saviour’s Drive and the recent Barratt development of the Meads to the north. The northern half of the western boundary of the site is defined by Park Lane, with existing properties on the western side fronting the road and overlooking the site. The southern half of the western boundary is defined by a field which has been retained in its current use.

Planning

A Reserved Matters planning application was approved in June 2019.

The site underwent a replan of the eastern parcel (Phase 2). The 108 unit Reserved Matters application was approved in September 2020 as shown in the approved layout opposite. The western parcel remained the same.

Artwork

This creative commission is by artists Adam Blencowe and Thor ter Kulve The project was funded by the developer, Barratt Homes. The artists created a site specific permanent artwork that responds to the industrial history of the local area; Coalpit Heath was founded as a coal mining settlement.

As part of their research the artists held a free creative workshop at the local primary school for families to make their own seat in a day. This enabled them to meet local residents, gather information about the local area to inform their design, and meet those potentially interested in participating in the project as it unfolds.

Adam and Thor have designed a circular seat to be built into the sloping central open space of the site. The design used the natural contours of the ground to create a resting place. The seat has a series of textured ceramic tiles fixed to a Corten steel frame. The shape of the artwork references the drumlins which often occur in areas where mining has historically taken place. Following a meeting with a member of the South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group, the artists named the project Blackberry Scratch after the technique of mining coal simply by scratching away the surface; this method was used locally around Coalpit Heath.
